The Umngot River at Dawki is one of those places that makes you question reality. When you first see it — boats floating on what looks like glass, the riverbed visible in perfect detail 15 feet below — you assume it's a photograph trick. It isn't.
When to Go
The best time to visit Dawki is October to April, when the river is at its clearest. Avoid monsoon (June–September).
My personal recommendation: late October to early November or March.
Getting There
From Shillong, Dawki is about 80–85 km south. It's a 2.5 to 3-hour drive through the East Khasi Hills.
What to Do
Boat Ride: Non-negotiable. Rent a rowboat or motorboat and glide over the crystal-clear water.
Shnongpdeng: About 4 km from Dawki, Shnongpdeng is where the action is — cliff jumping, kayaking, camping.
Important Tips
- Carry cash. ATMs are scarce in this area.
- Don't litter. The locals take immense pride in keeping this place clean.
- Carry a rain jacket regardless of the season. Meghalaya is Meghalaya.
